SwimShady und seine Gang auf dem Weg in die Freiheit

Ich bin gerade etwas enttäuscht darüber, dass es dort draußen ein Manatee namens SwimShady gibt, von dem ich bisher nichts wusste – und vor allem dass mich darüber bis heute noch keiner in Kenntnis gesetzt hat! Was soll denn das?

SwimShady, Alby & Manhattan are ready to return to FL. The primary goal was to get them big & strong enough to return to their native waters. Since arriving, they’ve consumed about 166,158 lbs of food & gained a combined total of about 1000 lbs! Nineteen manatees rehabilitated at the Cincinnati Zoo have returned to Florida waters, and Alby, Manhattan, and SwimShady will be released after they become reacclimated at one of the care facilities in Florida. The goal of the Manatee Rescue Partnership is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release manatees, and we’re honored to play a role in this important conservation work.

Das Sound-Repertoire von Leierschwänzen

Klingt wie ein Arcade-Klassiker aus den 1980ern, dieser Leierschwanz. Hat der Vogel vielleicht schon einmal irgendwo gehört.

Der „Gesang“ des Leierschwanzes ist eine Mischung aus seinem eigenen von Geburt an gegebenen Repertoire und nahezu jedem anderen Geräusch, das er einmal gehört hat. Die Syrinx (das Stimmorgan der Vögel) ist die ausgeprägteste aller Singvögel (Passeri), wodurch der Leierschwanz ein unerreichtes Potential zur Nachahmung von Geräuschen jeglicher Art aufweist. So ahmt der Leierschwanz mit Leichtigkeit den individuellen Gesang anderer Vögel nach. Bei in Gefangenschaft aufgewachsenen Leierschwänzen wird gelegentlich auch beobachtet, dass sie Maschinen wie Motoren, Alarmanlagen oder Kameraverschlüsse imitieren.

Leopard vs Stachelschwein

Hatte ich schon mal in anderer Konstellation, bleibt immer noch eine schlechte Idee. Auch für diese hungrige Leopardin. Aber Hunger fragt nicht nach Vernunft.

The predator was spotted stalking the spiky rodent, before taking a swipe at the prickly customer and quickly regretting his decision.

The bizarre battle, which lasted an hour and half, saw the determined leopard take several breaks to remove quills from his paws and lick his wounds, while the brave porcupine stuck around as if to tease his opponent.

Eventually the leopard admitted defeat and the pair slinked away together, appearing to call a truce.
