Was ich nicht wusste: in Südkalifornien werden an verschiedenste Bauelemente sogenannte „Skate stopper“ installiert, die Leute davon abhalten sollen, auf Geländern oder ähnlichem zu skaten. Was ich auch nicht wusste: da läuft jetzt Tüp rum, der diese Skate stopper vernichtet, damit die Leute dort skaten können: The Knob Buster. Akku-Flex macht’s möglich.

Skate stoppers are an unfortunate reality for skaters, but if you live in Southern California, you now have a masked hero who is alleviating these pains by unknobbing spots all across Los Angeles County for skaters to enjoy.

In Venice Beach haben sie den legendären Skate-Park mit Sand geflutet, um Skater fernzuhalten

_Der_ Skatepark in Venice Beach, Kalifornien. Da hauen die gerade ganz viel Sand rein, damit dort keiner mehr skaten geht. Ich verstehe beides. Sowohl das Bedürfnis, dort zu fahren, als auch das, das sagt, tut das gerade mal lieber nicht. Und so hauen die dort gerade die Bowls mit Sand voll.

Neulich in einem Apple-Store in Kalifornien. Ein GIF, wie aus einem Hollywood-Blockbuster. Da stehen und doof gucken.

Eingebettet zwischen zwei Nationalparks in Kalifornien kann man sich dort aktuell mal wieder eine Geisterstadt kaufen: die 1867 gegründete, verlassene Silberminenstadt namens Cerro Gordo. Geneigte Käufer müssen dafür etwas weniger als eine Million Dollar auf den Tisch legen. Verglichen mit hiesigen Grundstückspreisen ein echtes Schnäppchen.

Located in Owens Valley near the town of Lone Pine, the $925,000 property comes with over 300 acres of land, mineral rights, and no shortage of peace and quiet. There are 22 structures on site, including a historic hotel, bunkhouse, saloon, chapel, and museum—plus all of the artifacts that come with it.

“The site has been extremely well protected from diggers, artifact looters, and Mother Nature herself,” reads the listing, posted on a website specially created for the property that’s aptly named ghosttownforsale.com. “Restoration has been undertaken on most of the buildings, and the rest are in a state of protected arrested decay.”

Tumbleweeds „überfallen“ Stadt in Kalifornien

Bilder wie aus einem Horrorfilm der 70er Jahre. Tumbleweeds machen sich über Victorville her, einer Stadt in Kalifornien, deren Einwohner ob dessen 911 wählten.

“We’re not exactly sure how many homes are affected, but we’re estimating about 100 to 150 homes in that area,“ a Victorville spokesman told the Victorville Daily Press. “The primary goal is to clear the front of the houses, to remove the tumbleweeds in order to allow residents safe access to their homes…With the winds as strong as they are, as soon as they clear certain areas, more tumbleweeds are blowing right back in.” Not surprisingly, crews had to work overtime into the night to get rid of these thorny invaders.

Marodes Wohnmobil, das von Seilen zusammengehalten wird

„So lange das Auto noch fährt, ist es nicht kaputt sein“, dachte sich dieser Verkehrsteilnehmer in San Jose, Kalifornien, wohl und schipperte mit dem schon sichtbar demolierten Caravan, das mit Seilen zusammengebunden war, über die Straßen. Wie weit und lange er damit noch fahren konnte, ist nicht übermittelt. Und beim TÜV kann man sie leise weinen hören.

Mir ist klar, dass es wie in allen Ländern der Erde natürlich auch in den USA nicht wenige wohnungslose Menschen gibt. So dramatisch zentriert, wie es hier ein Radweg entlang am Santa Ana River offenbart, allerdings, habe ich das noch nicht gesehen. Direkt dahinter die Häuser mit Blick auf den Fluß – keine drei Meilen weiter steht das Disneyland Resort. Krass.

Junge zieht für einen Vierteldollar Kokain aus einem Spielzeugautomaten

In einem mexikanischen Restaurant in Bell Gardens, Kalifornien, hat ein Junge für einen Vierteldollar aus einem Spielzeugautomaten eine Kugel geholt, in der eigentlich ein kleines kindgerechtes Spielzeug stecken sollte. Stattdessen befand sich darin weißes Pulver, dass von der Mutter als Kokain identifiziert wurde, woraufhin sie die Polizei informierte. Jetzt nicht der schlechteste Kurs.

The mother called police, who arrived and tested the white powder, which was positive for the drug. Police opened the machine and found 136 grams, or just under 5 ounces, of cocaine bundled into other little packages, the Bell Gardens Police Department said in a statement.

Officials said a phone number on the side of the machine was registered to Snack Time Vending company. A woman who answered the phone at that number Wednesday morning told The Times that her company owned two other machines in the restaurant but not the one that contained the cocaine.

“We’re getting a bad rap,” said the woman, who declined to give her name.

Damian Marley macht aus ehemaligem Gefängnis eine Cannabis-Farm

Damian Marley, jüngster Sohn von Bob Marley, hat angekündigt aus einem ehemaligen Gefängnis in Kalifornien eine Farm machen zu wollen, die sich dem Anbau von medizinischem Marihuana widmen soll.

„Viele Leute haben im Laufe der Jahre so viel für das Zeug geopfert und wurden dafür eingesperrt“. sagt der 38-jährige Marley.

Damian Marley has announced that he, in partnership with Ocean Grown Extracts, is converting a former 77,000 square foot California State prison into a cannabis grow space that will cultivate medical marijuana for state dispensaries.

„Many people sacrificed so much for the herb over the years who got locked up,“ says Marley, 38, noting the poetic justice of turning a prison that once housed non-violent drug offenders into a cannabis cultivation facility. „If this [venture] helps people and it’s used for medicinal purposes and inspires people, it’s a success.“
