Tornado vs Drohne

Der Storm chaser und Fotojournalist Brian Emfinger machte am 2. Mai 2021 südöstlich von Yazoo City, Mississippi, mit einer Drohne Nahaufnahmen eines Tornados, wobei dieser sein filmendes Fluggerät aus der Luft schoß.

The tornado came at me a little further east than I first thought so where I lifted off the drone and was parked ended up being right in the middle of the path. Didn’t want to leave the spot because it was actually an open view but as debris started raining down and the tornado was within 100 yds or so I had to split.

Unfortunately during that brief dash I wasn’t focused on flying the drone and ended up losing it. Debris probably hit it around the time I was getting away from the tornado. That drone had flew in probably 10 hurricanes, was soaked numerous times in rain and snow, and had recently simply dropped out of the sky for no apparent reason…. so it lived a good drone life but it was its time.

Wenn ein aktiver Vulkan deine Drohne schluckt

Bjorn Steinbekk, a guy with a drone, hat uns in den letzten Monaten immer wieder mit grandiosen Dronenaufnahmen des aktiven Fagradalsfjall Vulkans in Island versorgt. Heute ist er wieder dort gewesen, ganz schön nahe in den Krater geflogen – und dann hat der Vulkan sich seine Drohne geholt. Vielleicht sollten manche Kapitel dann halt auch genau so dann mal enden.

It’s hard to describe in words, but I have actually been very emotional this morning, crying and sad but also so thankful for this experience and being able to share it with you. I realised last night when I took a walk down to say goodbye to this magnificent phenomenon that you can fall in love with a volcano. Takk!

Drohnenaufnahmen von Tausenden von Flipperautomaten

Eddie Codel hat beeindruckende Drohnenaufnahmen in einem Nebengebäude des Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda, Kalifornien, gemacht, die Tausende von Flipperautomaten zeigen, die dort aktuell katalogisiert, fotografiert und/oder repariert werden. Würde ich mir sehr gerne als längeren Clip am Stück ansehen, aber vielleicht kommt der ja noch nahe. Krass, so viele Pinball Machines auf einem Haufen.

Das offene Maul eines Wals

Der Filmemacher Bertie Gregory hat im Golf von Thailand einen Wal dabei gefilmt, wie der mit offenem Maul an der Wasseroberfläche Fische fängt und das sieht wahrhaftig beeindruckend aus.

This extraordinary behaviour (where the whale treads water!) is thought to have developed because pollution has made the Gulf of Thailand a hypoxic environment. Sewage outflows from the land have caused all the oxygen in the water to be used up, except at the surface. This means the whale’s fish prey can only live in this surface layer. By treading water and keeping the corners of their mouth below the surface, a flow is created pulling the fish into the whale’s mouth. In the panic, some of the fish also seem to jump out the water and into the whale’s mouth!

Wenn wir schon nicht reisen können, können wir uns wenigstens Aufnahmen ansehen, die das Fernweh zwar nicht kleiner machen, aber immerhin so etwas wie Kurzurlaubsstimmung aufkommen lassen.

In 2018 I took a trip with my friends Om and Mark to Iceland, it was also the first time I seriously explored drone photography and videography.
