Retro-Vinyl-Boom im Libanon: Beirut Disko

Arte Tracks war in Beirut unterwegs und hat dabei zugesehen, wie es ist, wenn Menschen die Musikgeschichte ihres Landes neu entdecken. Leider lässt sich die Kurz-Doku von Arte nicht einbetten, müsst ihr dort gucken.

In den Sechzigern war der Libanon ein Musik-Mekka. Jetzt erwecken ein paar junge Vinyl-Sammler diese goldenen Zeiten wieder zum Leben.

In Beirut boomt Vinyl – und dank den Platten entdecken die Libanesen ihre eigene Musikgeschichte neu! Denn in den 60er und 70er Jahren war Beirut das Las Vegas des Nahen Ostens – mit Labels, Presswerken und Stars wie Tony Benn, The Sea Dears oder Elias Rahbani. Der Bürgerkrieg von 1975 bis 1990 setzte all dem erst einmal ein Ende. Aber jetzt werden die alten Disko-Platten wieder gespielt – von jungen Sammlern und DJ’s.

2016: Es werden wieder Vinyl-Jukeboxen gebaut

Der englische Jukebox-Hersteller Sound Leisure hat seit gut 20 Jahren mal wieder eine Vinyl-Jukebox gebaut. Die Kiste nennt sich „Rocket“ und kommt in 50er-Jahre-Optik. Damit wäre das die aktuell einzig neu gebaute Schallplatten-Wunschkiste der Welt. Bisher wurde nur ein Prototyp vorgestellt, aber ich kann mir vorstellen, dass es den in seinem Laden zu haben, einigen ein Bedürfnis sein könnte. Play it again, Sam. Auf Vinyl.

The prototype vinyl Rocket is this week making its debut at the Classic Car show at ExCeL in London.

Figures released last year showed that sales of vinyl now make up almost 10 per cent of all physical album sales. In the UK, sales have grown by more than 56 per cent over the past 12 months, while in the US sales are up 38 per cent.

“It was a momentous occasion when we played a record on the prototype machine for the first time,” said the copmany’s managing director, Chris Black. “ We are officially now the only jukebox manufacturer in the world to now be producing a vinyl jukebox.” The design of the jukebox’s changer mechanism was a significant task and involved all the skill and knowledge of Sound Leisure’s R&D team.

Kurzdoku über Schallplatten auf Röntgenaufnahmen

Vor zwei Jahren schrieb ich hier über Kopien verbotener Schallplatten, die während der 50er Jahre in Russland auf Röntgenaufnahmen übertragen wurden. Jetzt gibt es dazu ein Kurzdoku, ein Buch und eine Website. Hier eine Galerie mit Hörbeispielen.

In the cold war era, the Soviet recording industry and permissible musical repertoire were ruthlessly controlled by the State. But a secret and risky subculture of bootleg recordings arose. Incredibly, bootleggers built homemade recording machines and found an extraordinary way to copy banned gramophone records – they used X-Rays clandestinely obtained from hospitals
X-Ray Audio: The Strange Story of Soviet Music on the Bone tells the secret history of these ghostly records and of the people who made, bought and sold them. Lavishly illustrated with images of discs collected in Russia, it is a unique story of forbidden culture, bootleg technology and human endeavour.

Gesperrte Grooves auf Schallplatten

Die Brüder Tessela und Truss haben für die nächste Veröffentlichung auf ihrem Poly Kicks-Label, eine sehr spezielle Art der Klangerzeugung angedacht. Der Künstler Haroon Mirza nämlich, von dem die nächste Doppel-12″ kommen soll, klebt selber seine Platten aus Glas, Pappe, Schleim und anderen Dingen zusammen und begrenzt die Drehungen durch irgendwelche Gegenstände, die er dann auf den laufenden Plattenteller legt. Seine „Locked Grooves“, die am Ende durch Peripherie verfremdete Loops sind, kommen nun, gepresst auf Vinyl, wieder zurück auf den Teller.

„The double pack, which contains two identical 12″s, is comprised of the recorded and processed versions of Mirza’s loops, and according to the label are “designed to be played together.”

50 Locked Grooves is released on January 25, and is the first of what Poly Kicks promises is a series of locked groove records.“

Schallplatten aus der CNC-Fräse: Shades of Grain

Christian hat mit ein paar Leuten ihre Musik mit einer CNC-Fräse auf alte Schallplatten geschnitten: Shades of Grain. Ich wusste nicht, dass so etwas überhaupt möglich ist, dem scheint aber so. Das Ergebnis ist neuer Drone-Ambient auf altem Platten und klingt gar nicht mal so übel.

Shades of Grain is an audiovisual performance using cnc machined phonograph records and high contrast monochrome projections.
Grinding drone and noise soundscapes meet grainy black and white visuals.
It´s to be showcased on an oversized rig with a massive low end to make it a physonical experience. The projections have to be strong and bright!

Shades of Grain is a cooperation between the Berlin based design and art studios
The Constitute and Pfadfinderei.

The Droneplates have been cnc machined out of various materials. There are two different types of plates: loops and tunes. The loops repeat a certain noisey beat into a deep and mesmerizing mood. The longer the loop runs, the grainier it gets through the abrasion of the material. The tunes have been made possible with the laser cut records framework from Amanda Ghassaei. By these wonderful bits of code we were able to transform wav. files in spiral vector curves to cnc route them in the next step. We used laser cutters and milling machines to explore the sonic capabilities of different processes and materials. Though many approaches failed, a few of them came out really well and have been included in the live set that we played on the 3rd of october as support act for The Bug. Which was a great honour and a strong lesson in how to set up a massive drone piece. The promoters of the festival set up two massive rig towers that made the performance pure physical joy.

Mit Schablone: Schallplatten rhythmische Knackserloops spielen lassen

Soundmäßig jetzt sicher nicht für jedermann vollends überzeugend, aber ich mag die Idee sehr: Scratch Edition. Auch wenn die Nadel das nach mehreren Versuchen sicher etwas anders sieht. Aber Plattenliebhaber schwärmen ja immer von dem „schönen Knacksen“. Hiermit können sie nachhelfen. Und ich hätte auch gerne so ein kleinen Siebdruckdingens zu Hause. Wenn auch aus anderen Gründen.

„I’ve invented a method of scratching rhythms into the ‚locked groove‘ at the center of vinyl records. This kit includes a unique hand scratched vinyl LP of our first record, with a hand screenprinted cover including templates for making your own scratched rhythms on other records in your collection. The music portion of the LP is unnaffected, of course. Includes five templates for common time signatures.“

Tortillas zu hörbaren Schallplatten lasern

Vor ein paar Monaten ging ein Video rum, in dem irgendwer einen mexikanischen Song auf Basis bekannter Stereotypen als Scherz auf einer angeblichen Platte zu verkaufen versuchte. Ein denkbar schlechter Scherz, weil gar nicht mal so lustig.

Jetzt aber hat Rapture Records angelehnt daran einen Song in eine Tortilla gelasert, die tatsächlich Sound von sich gibt.

„After a certain video went viral with someone „playing“ a tortilla with some piped-in music, I wanted to see if I could make an actual working tortilla record.

Recorded using the Numark PT-01 with a spare 78 diamond needle.

It’s an uncooked flour tortilla. Edible, but tastes burnt.

Cooked tortilla are lumpier in comparison and are more prone to shredding when played.

This is at 78 rpm. See my other video for comparisons between 45 rpm and 78 rpm.“

Gab es so hin und wieder schon als fotografische Aufnahmen, Ben Krasnow hat das jetzt auch mal in Bewegtbild und Zeitlupe festgehalten.

I describe how I made a stop motion animation of a phonograph needle in an LP groove using an electron microscope. I also show electron micrographs of other recording media.
