Mit mittelalterlichen Techniken eine Burg aus dem 13. Jahrhundert rekonstruieren

Guédelon ist ein Burgbauprojekt auf dem Gebiet der französischen Gemeinde Treigny im Département Yonne. Dort haben sich ein paar Leute zusammengefunden, die eine Burg aus dem 13. Jahrhundert rekonstruieren. Das tun sie mit Leidenschaft und ausschließlich mit handwerklichen Techniken, die eben zu dieser Zeit geläufig waren. Great Big Story hat sie besucht und sich das mal angesehen.

It’s hard to fathom how magnificent castles were built centuries ago. One group set out to understand just that by building their own masterpiece two hours outside of Paris. Tucked away in a forest, a team of master builders and archeologists are attempting to construct Guédelon, a castle from the 13th century, using only medieval techniques.

Wie Blattgold gemacht wird

Ich hatte in meiner ersten Ausbildung mal die Möglichkeit, mit Blattgold arbeiten zu können. Fand ich ziemlich geil und womöglich hätte ich damals nicht so vehement was anderes machen wollen, wenn ich mehr mit Blattgold hätte machen können.

Das hier zeigt wahrscheinlich den traditionellen Fertigungsprozess in Japan.

This series follows the technology used to make products we regularly come in contact with, explaining its contents and related science and technology. In this episode we introduce gold leaf. In order to make the gold leaf easy to stretch, silver and copper is mixed with gold by melting it at 1,300 degrees Celsius. After the gold alloy is thinned by running it through rollers, it is placed between sheets of special Japanese washi paper, and then pounded and thinned out until it’s thinned to a width of one ten-thousandth of a millimeter.

Eine Oscar-prämierte Glasbläser-Doku aus dem Jahr 1958 – auf Jazz: Glass

Glass. Und Jazz.

Glass is a 1958 non-verbal documentary short by Bert Haanstra that contrasts glassblowing techniques used inside the Royal Leerdam Glass Factory with more modern industrial machines. The first half shows several men at work using traditional glassblowing to create ornate objects like vases and mugs set against jazz music, while the second part shifts abruptly into the mechanized world of industrial glass production set to a whimsical score of more synthesized music. Also, there’s a ton of great smoking! It’s a really unusual little film that went on to pick up an Oscar for Documentary Short Subject in 1959.

Über einen traditionellen Bootsbauer: From Timber To Tide

Ein Freund von mir ist vor Jahren an die Ostsee gegangen, um dort Bootsbauer zu werden. Ich beneidete ihn immer ein wenig um diese Entscheidung, auch wenn das mein Beruf wohl nie wirklich gewesen wäre. Dennoch habe ich eine ziemlich naturromantische Vorstellung von dem, was er dort tut. Es scheint mir irgendwie Verbundenheit mit den Naturgewalten herstellen zu können und wirkt so wunderbar geerdet.

Ben Harris aus Cornwall, UK, ist auch traditioneller Bootsbauer und macht ziemlich genau das, was oben erwähnter Freund auch an der Ostsee macht: er baut Boote. Das hier ist ein Portrait über ihn und seine Arbeit.

Ben has always loved wood. His mother said that his first word was ‘log’. He has been working with wood throughout the UK since the age of 15. First as an assistant to a cabinet maker, where he started by sharpening the tools and clearing up. He then developed his skills in furniture making and his passion for wood and forestry by working in broadleaf woodlands. Later he tuned his skills in bespoke oak-framed carpentry and went on to establish a sawmill and oak framing business in Scotland, sourcing timber from the local estates. In 2005 Ben moved to Cornwall to study boatbuilding. He has been building boats and sailing them ever since.
